In Canada, it’ll be months before anyone’s wearing sandals for style outside. But for celebrities south of the border winter looks a little different, at least depending on which coast you’re on.
This week, fav California-based stars like Usher, Alessandra Ambrosio, Addison Rae and Avril Lavigne were in full-on summer mode, wearing bare legs, sandals and no coats. It looked glorious and enviable, especially as we roll into March and winter hits that seemingly endless grey point where it feels like it’ll last forever and ever. Meanwhile, back east, which has comparable weather to much of Canada rn, A-listers were layered up in wool, puffers, boots and hats to brave the cold. At least they feel our pain.
This week, we’re observing the often jealousy-inducing juxtaposition between a Cali winter and a New York winter, as told by a handful of stylish celebs.
Usher’s bermuda shorts, styled with a double cuff, are one of this season’s most coveted hues: lilac. Don’t they make you want a vacation, like, yesterday? Even his embroidered sweatshirt with a scene of palm trees, ocean and sunshine has me wishing that all-inclusive getaways were an option this year. Nice neon green Purnell watch, too.
Selena’s still at work on set in New York filming her upcoming comedy series Only Murders in the Building (it’s set to debut later this year). She’s staying toasty between scenes, too, thanks to outerwear like in this fuzzy burnt orange teddy coat and chunky white boots. And she’s always masked-up every time she’s spotted.
While we’re barely two months into the year, this Brazilian Victoria’s Secret angel isn’t wasting any time getting into shorts. Alessandra’s white drawstring shorts and flip flops (!!!) looked perfectly cute with a tie-dyed sweatshirt and coordinating tie-dyed mask.
Like Alessandra, SJP was sporting bright hues, too, but in Manhattan that means doing so with nylons and a coat pulled over whatever you’re wearing. Side note: if Carrie Bradshaw were living through the pandemic, she’d definitely be wearing an embellished mask like this.
Tiktok star Addison Rae looked laidback in a pair of camo cargos, spandex tank and Nikes while grabbing a coffee in Los Angeles. The 20-year-old was issued a speeding ticket while driving her pink Tesla earlier in the week, but that didn’t seem to put a damper on things.
Wide lapel wool coats continue to reign where there’s winter, and singer Justine Skye sported a gorgeous one in NYC. The black textured material looks so fresh as do her pinstripe trousers poking out from underneath.
Actress Ashley Greene is done with boot season, it seems, and has gone straight for a pair of rubber slides. I can’t blame her. If it were currently 24 degrees celsius here in Canada, I’d be wearing these, too.
For Irina, boots are still very much part of everyday life in February/March and this chunky combat-inspired pair is a solid choice for the snow. I have yet to see Irina wear the same coat twice this winter, and I’m starting to genuinely wonder if she has a separate apartment where she keeps them all.
Oversize pinstripe blazer, loose jeans, sling-back heels, dreamy olive-coloured Louis Vuitton bag and a black mask: like it or not, this is the epitome of style in 2021, especially come spring. I’ll take one of everything, plz.
Supermodel Helena Christensen is also on board with the relaxed jeans trend. She looks so good. The star was spotted on a walk in New York holding her dog’s leash in one hand and a coffee in the other, and of course a mask covering her face—the gingham print is refreshing from the sea of black masks.
In LA, you can wear just a sweatshirt outside in February, no jacket needed! Avril and musician Mod Sun were twinning, he in a black Misfits sweatshirt, tapered cargos and chunky footwear, and her in an all-black hoodie, red tapered cargos and equally chunky footwear. A match made in musical heaven.
Another couple spotted out this week: Emily Ratajkowski and her partner Sebastian in New York walking their pupper. The pair also gave off those laid-back vibes with coordinating hoodies, but pulled on jackets to keep cozy.
Dang, Chrissy Teigen. That cropped tank is smokin’ especially paired with transparent, plastic heels and a sunshiny quilted chain bag. If you need me, I’ll be buried in a massive wool turtleneck and I'm not coming out until it’s hot enough to wear something like this.
Hailey was in Soho looking cozy in a teddy bear wrap coat, relaxed-fit jeans and pristine white sneaks. Of course, she's also got on the accessory of the year: a black face mask.
