Jason Momoa recently opened up about his family's struggles after his Game of Thrones (stream now on Crave) character Khal Drogo was killed off the series before it became a major hit. Momoa spent years struggling to pay the bills at the home he shares with his wife, Lisa Bonet and their two kids, while the rest of the characters in the series thrived as the show became the most awarded series in Emmy Awards history.Momoa said that they were "starving after Game of Thrones," adding that he couldn't get any work. "It's very challenging when you have babies and you're completely in debt," he told InStyle. But of course, that didn't stop The Great Khal from going out there and becoming a superhero — cue Aquaman. Momoa landed the Justice League role in 2016 where he played the half-human, half-Atlantean who can communicate with marine creatures. Momoa headlined the Aquaman movie in 2018 two years after landing the role in Justice League and Aquaman 2 is on the way but Game of Thrones is over so who really wins here?Aquaman is a very fitting character for Momoa who actually dropped his plan to study marine biology and became an actor after hearing Baywatch Hawaii was having an open casting call when he was 19. “So I went down with all my cousins,” he told the publication. “We just wanted to meet chicks. About 1,300 people showed up.” Momoa was offered one of the lead roles but once the series wrapped in 2001 he left Hawaii and moved to Los Angeles to follow his new dream of acting. Momoa recalled not being able to get an agent for three to four years after his move but now he's fully booked and busy until 2024 with projects like Apple TV+'s See and sci-fi film Dune with Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet.Momoa said he freaked out when he saw his name on the Dune trailer. "It was ‘Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem,’ and I’m just like, ‘Oh my god. I can’t believe my name was with those names.’ I feel like I’m still a kid, freaking out,” he said. Does he know that his name is Jason... Momoa? (because that is a pretty big deal).[video_embed id='5511431734001']RELATED: John Boyega Slams Game of Thrones for Lack of Diversity[/video_embed]Throughout his interview, Momoa opened up about his style and not being afraid to wear pink “Pink is just a beautiful colour,” he said. “And I’m pretty secure in my masculinity. I don’t really give a shit what anyone thinks.” Momoa also said that he "got beat up a lot" as a kid and said he was an easy target for bullies as the only mixed-race kid in his Iowa elementary school. Khal Drogo getting beat up? How dare they!“I got beat up a lot. Just for being slightly different—it was gnarly. I mean, I wore Birkenstocks in middle school, and it was like, ‘You are a freak,'” he said, adding that everyone has the feminine and male side in them and "we need to embrace both."Speaking of masculinity, Momoa revealed that he's currently going to therapy and exploring issues of male vulnerability. He said that he is diving into what it meant for him to grow up without having a father at home and how that affects his relationship with his son, Wolf. "I didn't know what it takes to be a dad," Momoa said. "And I don't want to just tell my son, 'Because I said so.'" He said he wants to "really connect" with his 12-year-old son and wants him to also be vulnerable and open.
Momoa said that he's also going to therapy to figure out how to switch gears when he gets home after filming long hours of fight scenes. “I’m amping myself up all day long, and then my nervous system doesn’t know that I’m not lopping people’s heads off,” he said, adding that it's extremely hard for him to relax and sit still. From being "completely in debt" after GOT to not being able to relax, it's safe to say that Momoa's hard work and dedication is paying off majorly.
