Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen have been besties for about two decades now, but their adorable friendship feels like it goes back even further than that. The pair first bonded while they were filming X-Men together and had adjoining trailers, and they realized they were meant to be the kind of friends whose bond makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside. These days, the men have co-starred in blockbuster movies, attended each other’s important events, and even played at the theatre together. Yet somehow, at the end of the day they can’t seem to get enough of each other. In honour of McKellen’s 81st birthday on May 25, here are all the times these dapper gents proved they were BFF goals.[video_embed id='1881806']RELATED: Sir Patrick Stewart on what it was like playing a new, older Picard[/video_embed]

They’re always ready to hold hands...

There’s something sweet about besties who aren’t afraid of a little PDA—it’s like a sign that they’ll hold each other up no matter what. Of course when they also sport matching bowlers and post all about it on social media while holding hands, it’s even sweeter.

...and share a friendly hug

Seriously, do anyone else in the world wear bowlers this well? Fashion statements aside, these Sirs aren’t afraid to show serious emotion . . . or their silly sides. Obviously they’re always up for a laugh or a moment of reflection together, and it totally shows.

They’ll go for a kiss when the mood suits them

And no one should ever, ever forget this ah-mah-zing PDA, please and thank you. The Sirs have locked lips more than once for the cameras, and fans are there for it every single time, like this sweet peck during the premiere of the 2015 flick, Mr. Holmes.[caption id="attachment_4936776" align="alignleft" width="960"] Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart attend the UK Premiere of "Mr Holmes" at ODEON Kensington on June 10, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart attend the UK Premiere of "Mr Holmes" at ODEON Kensington on June 10, 2015. There are about a million other examples of when they’ve supported each other on the red carpet

Whenever one of these gents has an important premiere or night to celebrate, you can always count on the other to be there backing his bestie up.

It's double the LOLs when they get interviewed together

Most fans can probably agree that watching the Sirs sit down to talk about a project they’re working on together is an absolute DELIGHT.

They’re down to hit the road together

Travelling for work and being away from home can be stressful for the best of friendships. So you know that if you can not only survive, but thrive after being on the road together, you and your bestie are in it for the long haul.

They’re also good drinking buddies

Sometimes these guys drink tea, other times their bevies of choice are a bit stronger. Either way, they’re down to enjoy the finer things in life, like a cold one and each other’s company. We're all for keeping it simple.

And they cook for each other, too

Besties who love each other, party together, work together, and cook for each other... it doesn’t get any more delicious than that.

There’s that time they played the Newlywed Game

Does anyone else feel the need to shake the person’s hand who made this little gem happen? Watching the Sirs hilariously fail (and therefore win) at the Newlywed Game in front of an audience is live theatre at its best.

When Ian married Patrick and his wife, Sunny Ozell

Best friends will stand by your side when you get hitched. But a best pal for life will actually become ordained and officiate your wedding for you like the Sir that he is.

They spend important holidays together

Even the Sirs know that all you need for a kickass New Year’s Eve shindig is a paper party hat and your bestie by your side.

And birthdays, too

No birthday is complete without a little love from your bestie. And while it seems like physical distancing will keep the Sirs apart for McKellen’s 81st, you just know that as soon as restrictions are lifted and people can hang out again that these two are going to find each other. And when they do, the internet will be here to swoon over it. [video_embed id='1963954']RELATED: ‘Friends’ stars reunite for charity escape room[/video_embed]
