Serena Williams bares it all for Vanity Fair's August 2017 cover story, posing nude to show off her baby bump, and getting honest about how surprised she was to learn she's pregnant with fiance Alexis Ohanian's child.

“If you would have told me last year in October or November that I would have a baby, not be pregnant but have a baby, I would have thought you were the biggest liar in the world," Williams tells the mag. "This is kind of how I am right now. This is happening sooner than later, and it’s going by so fast.”

In fact, the 35-year-old tennis star reveals when she took her pregnancy test back in January ahead of the Australian Open, she did it mostly to prove she wasn't pregnant, despite a few physical signs she may be expecting.

“I put it down. I went back to finishing hair and makeup, was laughing, talking. I was getting the styling done. An hour and a half later, I went back to the bathroom and I totally forgot about it because it was impossible for me," she recalls. "So I went back to get dressed and I went back in the bathroom and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, that test.’ ”

Her response before confirming with five additional pregnancy tests?

“Oh my God, this can’t be—I’ve got to play a tournament. How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year.”

While Serena changed her approach to the tournament to account for reduced endurance, she did indeed go on and win the Australian Open.

Now six months pregnant, she and Alexis are embracing their surprise, though she also admits she hasn't done a ton to prepare for their newborn's arrival.

“I don’t know what to do with a baby. I have nothing. . . . I’ve done absolutely nothing for the baby room," she says.

On the contrary, Serena is focused and confident about one thing: returning to pro tennis as early as January.

"I don't think my story is over yet," she says.
